"Blue"

Writer's picture: Sebastian SpindlerSebastian Spindler

This is "Blue”, a proud lady in our care. She owes her name to her tragic story. Blue was once teased by young people in her area and regularly beaten until one day she bit one of the children. From that day on, vets had been on the hunt for Blue and wanted her to be euthanized. We found her first & now offer her a safe haven away from the threat of euthanasia and the torment she faced in her daily life. Somebody reported the incident to a veterinary office luckily a friend was also informed also informed about it & she took it on herself to find and rescue Blue. Knowing that if the veterinary office heard about her sheltering Blue they would come and take her away she painted Blue black to disguise her & so they could not find white & brown spotted dog of her description in our yard.

We know it's not nice to paint a dog, but there was no other way to save her from certain death. In Brazil the clocks tick a little differently and there was really no other option. When the office could not find the described dog in the yard they left & we of course immediately removed the color & found that the black color turned into blue. Even after thorough washing her fur was still slightly bluish for a few days & it is for this reason she became known as “Blue". Blue was separated into an individual enclosure with Thor, another male dog who also showed very dominant features when in a pack. When I was at the dog farm for the first time I was told that I shouldn't go into their enclosure because they don't know whether Blue would react aggressively to people.

My first visit to the courtyard also caused worlds to collide, and we humans had sometimes strong differences of opinion among one another. One day after a dispute I went to Blue and Thor & give them fresh water through the chain link fence. Blue licked my hand, and I decided to go into the enclosure and keep them both close to people and company. The two people in the yard (Jade and Dita) looked horrified at me in the kennel and couldn't believe it when they saw Blue jumping on me, hugging me and starting to lick my face like crazy. From that day on Blue and Thor were able to come out of their enclosure and join the other dogs in the free range area. The picture above with me and Blue was taken a short time after she was released from her enclosure. She is one of those dogs I'm sure I have a special relationship with.

We can seldom find out the exact age of most dogs, but Blue will be at least 12 years old and her look is truly that of a proud lady!

Blue unfortunately passed away on April 5th, 2021 after suffering from severe kidney disease. :-( We tried everything we could, but her kidneys were too weak. An operation and special food were not enough to keep her with us. Like everyone who has passed away she will not be forgotten and will come to life in our memories.
