(on July 29th, 2022 a double rainbow appeared at the kennel, one week after Brava and one day after Barriguda passed away)
The last few weeks have not been easy, but it has never been easy in the last two years. In the last week of July, first Brava and a few days later Barriguda passed away. With Brava, it was predictable after we found out from the vet that her organs were riddled with tumors, so it was only a matter of time.
The question why Barriguda died unexpectedly remains open.
She had recently escaped from our farm with Ménino and both returned the following day, both with many porcupine quills all over their faces. Dita immediately removed the spines and treated them as well as possible. This has happened more than once, and we know that the spines must be removed completely and as quickly as possible, otherwise symptoms of poisoning can occur and even lead to death. Whether that was the case with Barriguda is not clear, but we cannot rule it out.

Our dear Brava came back to our kennel after her diagnosis because we wanted to give her a few nice days in her familiar surroundings. She was fed with chicken and given some extra attention, as much as it gets when only 2 people can actively take care of 90 dogs, 13 cats and 3 chickens.
It's not easy, it has never been, but our hands are tied. The plan was to build the new dog shelter on the new piece of land as quickly as possible, and above all with a more well thought-out principle, in order to make work there easier, more efficient and safer for only two people. However, we have been stuck in this plan since the price increases and are simply not making any progress or just making progress very slowly. Brava then died very quickly in Dita's arms on July 23, at least in familiar and loving surroundings.

Barriguda initially felt better after the porcupine attack, but eventually a large lump grew on the side of her neck and Dita took her to the vet after Barriguda ate less and her general condition deteriorated again. The vet did a blood test and was able to read out poisoning-like anomalies based on the blood exam. Even after she had been treated with medication at the vet shortly before for the same diagnosis, but there was still no improvement, we left her in the veterinary clinic to be on the safe side, where she could continue to receive medication intravenously. And two days later she just died at night in the vet clinic.

I couldn't say goodbye to either of them and it doesn't seem real to me to think of not seeing them again when I next fly to Brazil.
Barriguda accompanied me intensively when I was at the dog yard for 9 months in 2018/2019. She slept in my bed every day, always by my side, like Diesel and Ana-Rita. She was happy every time I came back to the shelter after I had been in Germany for months, sometimes years, to earn the money to keep the shelter running.
I now blame myself for, thinking that it hurts the dogs the same way when I have to go back to Germany just as it hurts me. It breaks my heart to have to leave them every time, even if it is necessary to keep this sanctuary maintained. It breaks my heart, and that's not an inflationary phrase, it really hurts, physically, every time. I sometimes struggle with depressive states and have to mentally bend myself so much in order not to go down that it changes me.

It also hurts that such bad news predominates on this blog, and it's becoming increasingly difficult for me to report about it. Nevertheless, I want to leave something positive in this blog.
Recently we got to know a person who not only wants to support us monthly with financial means, but also wants to take a look at the dog yard in Brazil to actively help. This gives us new courage, because we urgently need more supporters to be able to build the shelter on the new land and to escape all time limitations in this regard. He comes from Germany and is already very actively involved according to his possibilities and I will visit him soon to establish personal contact.
My current financial resources don't really allow me to fly to Brazil to show him the shelter because it's still my turn to gather money for the fine (to the Brazilian authorities) I have to pay for my overstay in 2018/2019. The prices for the flights there and back have almost doubled again. The cost of my last flights in March/April of this year was just around €600, when I wanted to research the prices last week purely for information, they were just €1100 again.

(August 10th 2022: Piko continues worrying us, now he also has a tumor like growth on his lower eyelid)
Despite all the bad news, we are happy that we have a few but loyal and honest supporters! At this point a big thank you from all of us to every single supporter!!!
Take a look at the following videos to see what happy scenes can happen thanks to your help and let us find the courage again and again.
