So Close No Matter How Far

(February 11th 2018)

While others count the stars in the sky at night, I count my worries and try to sort them by difficulty. Concerns about the dogs in Brazil at our sanctuary. Not just every day, rather every minute. It feels to me like watching the dogs, Dita and Jade and the other animals in our shelter slowly dying. Every day... It's not easy to deal with, even if it's far away. But I can hardly concentrate on what is happening in my immediate vicinity, because my worries, my heart and my motivation is in Brazil with the dogs, Dita and Jade.

Another dog just disappeared overnight, he hasn't come back for days and unfortunately we can only assume that the neighbor's dogs caught him. Maio escaped through the badly defective fence and hasn't reappeared since. Amigo and Piko are two dogs that we are concerned about due to age and illness. Amigo has bone cancer and is unable to undergo surgery due to his age. Even if we did, we wouldn't have the money to do so. Piko's hind legs are stiff again and he can hardly walk, his bad eye can only be treated provisionally because we don't have the money there either. Last Sunday there was another smaller, short storm. However, our current dog shelter is now so unstable that this short storm was enough to tear 6 roof elements out of their attachment and smash them on the ground. The city hall has something against us building a new kennel on our own piece of land and moving. I have described the reasons for this several times in previous blogs and it won´t change. Obstacles will be put in our way because the city itself does NOTHING for animal welfare and cannot show any projects of this kind, but by law it actually has to be like this.

Everyone, no matter where they come from, is certainly worried about the (geo)political situation, inflation and the future. The same worries come to me "on top", although I can't quite feel these worries. Simply because I see no future right now and can only live for the day. Anything else would only bring more tears to my face. At the same time, however, people need a view of the future in order not to become lethargic and lose their courage.

What also really shocked me is the fact how many people spread fake stories about animals on social networks on the one hand, and on the other hand how many people prefer to surrender to the feelings of pity that this fake story triggers in them, and how few people do find out if the story is true at all. Personally, I don't care if you can call me jealous. It's just extremely bitter to see how a true story that doesn't shine but shows all rough edges without embellishing anything, gets lost in a mush of fictional contributions for which users are even paid. They get paid to drown reality with their heartbreaking stories and images of strangers!? I just can't believe it, it all paints a bleak picture of humankind and humanity of today.

You would think that in a world of 8 billion people it wouldn't be that difficult to find 1000 people willing to donate €1-2 per month to an animal welfare project. We can reach millions of people every day through social media, but are we really reaching them? Very few are reached in this jungle of fake stories, bots, advertising... It's like a wall and it's not about posting a great-looking dinner or sharing newly bought shoes on the web. However, exactly such things have more fans than social commitment. We wouldn't need any help if we could share a post each week about how well we're doing at the kennel. We're not doing well on the farm, but we're fine with the thought that we're at least trying to do something good. We are fine with the thought of not having to ask ourselves why we are actually doing all this, for which we are sacrificing our time, our strength and our money in this short life. Every day we look into a sea of eyes that don't care how good dinner looks on an Instagram picture, but are happy to have anything to eat at all. A sea of eyes that aren't complaining that the roof over their heads is being ripped off in a storm, but are just happy that there are two people who will take care of it - as best they can. A sea of eyes that don't care how rich or poor you are, just happy not to be let down again.

Not to forget especially Jade, she will most likely not get to know any other life than that on the dog sanctuary. She is 26 years old, without school education, without training, without social skills, she has been living 24/7 on the dog farm for 10-11 years, without a break. It's her home, just like it is for Dita. They have no house or apartment to retreat to. They live exclusively with the dogs, in the wilderness and in huts that are now collapsing. What kind of future can these two people see if they are already living in a way that none of us here can even imagine?

Many lives hang by a thread that threatens to break more and more every day.
