(September 5th 2022: "Suri")
We need support for Suri and Piko.
A few days ago we (Dita and Jade) brought Suri to our dog shelter at night, otherwise she would probably have been killed or at least attacked by the neighbour's dogs. We know we can no longer accommodate animals as times are critical. But no one wants to hear a pack of dogs chasing and attacking a fellow dog. Unfortunately, we have had to experience this more often, as it happens that people (usually under cover of darkness) put their dogs in front of our yard. The dogs are then often already abandoned in the vicinity of the neighbors, of course the people don't want to be seen. I've often thought about what an abandoned dog has to go through. Brought to the country from city life, in the dark, abandoned, roaring dogs barking everywhere, alone and no idea where to go to protect yourself.
We've had to hear the neighbor's dogs aggressively barking in unison for a few nights already, you can literally hear the hunt, that's not possible without having pictures in your mind's eye...
Unfortunately, some dogs did not make it to our sanctuary.
We were able to save Suri, but she urgently needs to be castrated and a swelling on the lower abdomen needs to be examined.
We can use support for this, as our funds are very limited.

I have already sent Dita and Jade what I have saved so far - since May 2022 - to Brazil. We have to reckon with everything, even a blackout. So I sent my savings so we could cover the shelter costs a month in advance in case of a power outage.
Piko also needs support again, he has had an ulcer in his right eye for some time. Next Thursday Suri and Piko will be driven to the vet to have the preliminary examinations done. We don't yet know if Piko's eye can be treated, and if so how.
However, it is certain that we must take care of Suri. She must be neutered to prevent further unwanted reproduction.

This is the main problem around the world, in regions where dog shelters and clubs are springing up like weeds. Many cities do not have spay/neuter programs but want to address the problem of excessive street dogs. Yes, as a city you can of course put the budget available for this into clubs that run adoption programs. However, clubs often face the problem that their funds are not sufficient to start castration programs. First and foremost, an association must be able to support itself and meet its goal of animal adoption. This often creates a flow, a machine that conveys animals, but often also lives off the problem that they actually want to fight. Club obligations towards the city or the state must also be observed according to the applicable law. Anyone who has dealt with this intensively knows that it is not really that easy. It is not uncommon for a conflict of interest to arise, whether consciously or unconsciously, which personally calls into question the association's work for me. I'm not talking about the actual intentions of the club leaders or members, I'm just talking about the construct of the club and what is necessary for it.
There are associations that resemble a company, and when business comes into play, animal welfare takes a back seat.

We ourselves give everything we can, and really every cent goes to the benefit of the animals!
Of course, not everyone can and should do that, but you can share the project as a "team", talk about it, show friends, and maybe even achieve the goal of the "100Dogs - 1000People" campaign. We have a few dear supporters who send us a small donation every month, nevertheless, we are still dependent on support and ask everyone who reads this again: Please share our blog or approach the donation link.

In the coming days, the excavator will be used to do a few small tasks on the new land in order to be able to complete the very first step - leveling the land. After that, it's time to start saving money again in order to be able to take the next step. Even if the future looks uncertain and we often worry about how things will continue, we are glad that at least something has happened in the new country this year. Despite everything, we are confident that we will be able to bring our protégés safely to the new shelter land before 2024 and continue to care for them there. For the next year it is planned that Thomas and I will travel to Brazil together in mid-2023, firstly to show Thomas the dog shelter and the new land, and secondly to take further construction measures on site (as far as it is then possible).
We will not give up the kennel, no matter what the cost. It is an affair of the heart, and those who give up their hearts do no longer live. We will do everything humanly possible to bring the dogs, cats and chickens to safety and give them a decent life. Animals are a source of endless, unconditional love. That's why people are attracted to animals. We must protect this source, support it and keep it alive.
